My Experience: After completing the Takachiho hike, I was debating staying or heading south given the weather. I decided to stay but undecided (given how cold it was if I would stay in van or find lodging. On the way back north to the Ebino Plateau area, I found a day-use onsen called Kirishima Shinmonso Private National Lodging House 民営国民宿舎 霧島新燃荘 and decided to try. At only 400 yen, it was a gift from the gods, literally. The staff were ultra friendly. Although an inn, checkout time had already occurred so there was virtually noone around. They have both male and female onsen as well as a shared onsen area. The waters were milky and very hot and heavenly (especially after a cold winter hike). This onsen not only mad emy day but week as well. After enjoying the onsen for an hour, I headed north to the Ebino Plateau enjoying hot Miyazaki Beef Soba Seasonal Restaurant Miyamatei (旬処 美やま亭). From here with warm body and full stomach, I decided to stay the evening in the parking lot Ebinokogen Daiichi Parking Lot えびの高原第一駐車場 with clean, heated restrooms. The parking was only 500 Yen for the day which allowed overnight. Even though I hike the next morning, they put a notice my van showing I was exempt from another days payment. It was a cold night with lots of people arriving at different times of early morning from every where from 1-4 AM so by the time I awoke, an empty parking lot was essentially halfway full with people that would be starting an early AM hike. I started my hike around 7AM (if I am recalling correctly) with total move time of around 3 hours and 3.5 hours total time out. On completion of my hike I once again ate the Miyazaki Beef Soba and also revisited the Kirishima Shinmonso Private National Lodging House onsen for another post-hike soak and before heading to Kagoshima and Sakurajima. Source: GSJ About: Kirishima Mountains (霧島山, Kirishima-yama) are a 1700 meter high active volcano group in Kagoshima Prefecture and Miyazaki Prefecture, Kyushu, Japan. Numerous eruptions have been recorded since 742. Very strong eruptions happened in 788, 1716 and 1717. Augite-hypersthene andesite is the dominant rock type. The highest peak is Karakuni-dake (韓国岳, Karakunidake) (1700 m). Its name literally means "Korea Peak"; it was once believed to be so high that the Korean Peninsula could be seen from its summit. Other peaks include the sacred and often fabled in national foundation mythology, Takachiho-no-mine (高千穂峰) (1573 m) as well as Shinmoedake (新燃岳), both active volcanoes. They are part of Kirishima-Yaku National Park near Kirishima City. Legend via oldest extant texts state the summit of Takachiho was stuck the mysterious spear Ama-no-Sakahoko, by the legendary Ninigi-no-Mikoto. Mount Kirishima is considered one of the 100 Famous Japanese Mountains. Shinmoedake is the most active of the Mount Kirishima volcanoes, having erupted in January 2011, March 2011, October 2017, and April 2018. Source: Wikipedia Geologic Summary: Kirishimayama is a large group of more than 20 Quaternary volcanoes located north of Kagoshima Bay. The late-Pleistocene to Holocene dominantly andesitic group consists of stratovolcanoes, pyroclastic cones, maars, and underlying shield volcanoes located over an area of 20 x 30 km. The larger stratovolcanoes are scattered throughout the field, with the centrally located Karakunidake being the highest. Onamiike and Miike, the two largest maars, are located SW of Karakunidake and at its far eastern end, respectively. Holocene eruptions have been concentrated along an E-W line of vents from Miike to Ohachi, and at Shinmoedake to the NE. Frequent small-to-moderate explosive eruptions have been recorded since the 8th century.
