Lynn Julian lives with multiple medical conditions including traumatic brain injury, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), migraine, hearing loss, and more. But her life didn't start out that way. Now the director of medical marijuana advocacy for Leaftopia, Lynn credits cannabis with saving her life. #traumaticbraininjury #ptsd #cannabis #medicalmarijuana #rarediseases Over a decade ago, Lynn was a professional musician. She landed what she thought was a dream gig in Boston, but slipped on an untaped cord and suffered a devastating stage accident. She suffered all the classic signs of head injury – blurred vision, headaches, vertigo – but doctors couldn't figure out the cause of her injuries. She spent the next six years in a wheelchair taking multiple medications for pain and anxiety, until finally, doctors discovered two tiny holes just behind her eardrum that needed to be surgically repaired. Over the six years, Lynn fought her way out of the wheelchair and into a cane. Things were looking up: she was walking again and went back to school to become an actor. "Mere months after I got rid of the cane, I became an injured survivor of the Boston Marathon bombings," Lynn says. "You make plans, and then life happens." With her home located near the finish line of the Boston Marathon, Lynn suffered what's called blast force trauma, a type of physical injury caused by exposure (direct or indirect) to an explosion. She was diagnosed with another traumatic brain injury, head and neck injuries, permanent hearing loss, and PTSD. Over a 10-year period, Lynn was given a surplus of opioids, muscle relaxants, and anti-depressants, which seemed to cause even more side effects including dizziness, nausea, and vomiting. And then one day, she tried cannabis. "I explored cannabis and found the silver lining," Lynn says. "And it worked so much better for me than opioids did. Cannabis is much less harmful to your health because we have an endocannabinoid system built in our bodies to digest it." Reflecting back on her years of physical and mental trauma, Lynn is now a passionate advocate for medical marijuana. Using cannabis, she's been able to transition off many of her prescription medications and overall has a higher quality of life. Now dealing with the devastating effects of long COVID, Lynn has experienced extreme weight loss due to compromised organ function and pancreatitis. Lynn is a patient advocate for multiple organizations, like the American Migraine Foundation, but is especially passionate about cannabis as medicine. "I advocate for medical marijuana because it saved my life," she says. "This medication, this plant, this flower...I can't imagine my life without it."
