The General Assembly elected 14 new Member States to serve a three-year term in the Human Rights Council. Algeria, Bangladesh, Belgium, Chile, Costa Rica, Georgia, Germany, Kyrgyzstan, Maldives, Morocco, Romania, S. Africa, Sudan, and Viet Nam will join the Council starting January 2023. For the group of African States, all four candidates were elected: South Africa (182 votes) Algeria (178), Morocco (178), and Sudan (157). In the group of Asia-Pacific States, Bangladesh (160), Maldives (154), Viet Nam (145) and Kyrgyzstan (126) were elected. Afghanistan (12) and Republic of Korea (123) didn’t get enough votes. For the group of Eastern European States, the two candidates, Georgia (178) and Romania (176), were elected. In the group of Latin American & Caribbean States, were elected Chile (144), Costa Rica (134). Venezuela, with 88 votes, will not have a seat in the Council. Belgium (169 votes) and Germany (167) were the sole candidates for the Western European and other States group. Screenshot credit: UN Photo/Cia Pak --------- In accordance with paragraph 7 of General Assembly resolution 60/251, the Council shall consist of 47 Member States, which shall be elected directly and individually by secret ballot by the majority of the members of the General Assembly. The membership shall be based on equitable geographical distribution, and seats shall be distributed as follows among regional groups: Group of African States (13) Group of Asia-Pacific States (13) Group of Eastern European States (6) Group of Latin American and Caribbean States (8) Group of Western European and other States (7) The members of the Council shall serve for a period of three years and shall not be eligible for immediate re-election after two consecutive terms. In accordance with General Assembly resolutions 60/251 and 65/281 and decision 75/402, the Human Rights Council starts its yearly membership cycle on 1 January. #unga #UnitedNations
