THE GOSPEL OF JOHN - CHAPTER 16: SOMEDAY, NO MORE PROVERBS

Knowing that he would soon be taken from the disciples, Jesus wanted them to keep the faith. In this chapter, he spoke words of encouragement, laying aside the riddles and proverbs that had so often confused the people. As Jesus and the disciples drew near to the Garden of Gethsemane, he dispensed with the metaphors and riddles that had been used to keep the Temple authorities in doubt of his deity. Knowing that he would soon be betrayed and lead away for crucifixion, he wanted those closest to him to maintain their confidence in the mission. Sensing their sorrow, Jesus began to speak plainly in order to help them cope with the sufferings that lay ahead. It is remarkable that this part of Christ's journey ends up in chapter 16 given that it corresponds with the 16th letter of the Hebrew alphabet - ayin - the letter that stands for perception and insight, which is the very theme addressed in verse 13 of this 16th chapter. This bears the evidence of a supernatural and divinely appointed orchestration of scripture by God. Jesus said in this chapter that the Holy Spirit would "guide into all truth and show all things to come." This type of guidance involves opening one's spiritual understanding. It requires more than mere mental processes. The bible refers to this particular acquisition of knowledge as something that can only be imparted from beyond the realm of normal understanding. The letter ayin also stands for the eyes, the physical organs used to see the world in which we live; gain three dimensional depth perception; and enjoy all the various colors that make our world interesting and exciting. In like manner, gaining spiritual insight into various meanings of scriptures helps us to gain a multi-dimensional perception and appreciation for God's plan for mankind. The Hebrew letters and alphabet are the original language of the bible. As various acrostics in scripture reveal, the Hebrew letters and their order are of divine origin. The Hebrew letters are unique in this regard, since you can learn things about God from the Hebrew letters themselves and their spiritual properties.
