Kauai's Hindu Monastery, also known as Kauai Aadheenam, is a traditional Saivite Hindu monastery-temple complex located on the island of Kauai in Hawaii, USA. It is a spiritual sanctuary founded in 1970 by Satguru Sivaya Subramuniyaswami, an American-born Hindu monk, and is currently led by his successor, Satguru Bodhinatha Veylanswami. Nestled in a lush, tropical setting near the Wailua River, the monastery spans 382 acres and serves as a center for Hindu worship, education, and monastic life. The monastery is home to two significant temples: the Kadavul Temple, established in 1973, and the San Marga Iraivan Temple, an all-granite structure still under construction. The Kadavul Temple houses a rare 700-pound, six-faced crystal Sivalinga (a natural quartz crystal) and is dedicated to Lord Shiva in his Nataraja form, symbolizing cosmic dance and creation. The Iraivan Temple, inspired by Subramuniyaswami’s vision of Shiva, is being meticulously hand-carved in India and assembled on Kauai, representing a blend of ancient Tamil architectural traditions and modern devotion. This spiritual hub follows the Saiva Siddhanta tradition, a monistic school of Hinduism that reveres Lord Shiva as the Supreme Being, alongside deities like Ganesha and Murugan. The resident monks, numbering around two dozen from various nations, lead a disciplined life of worship, meditation, and service, maintaining self-sufficiency by growing their own food and managing the grounds. The monastery also serves as the headquarters for the Himalayan Academy, which publishes Hinduism Today magazine, books, and other educational resources to promote Hindu philosophy and culture globally. Visitors are welcome daily from 9 AM to noon for self-guided tours of the front grounds, featuring serene gardens, a massive banyan tree, and sculptures of Hindu deities. Reservations are required for the 9 AM Siva puja in the Kadavul Temple. The site is a blend of natural beauty and spiritual depth, attracting both devotees and those seeking tranquility. Its location on Kauai, often called the "Garden Island," enhances its peaceful ambiance, making it a unique outpost of Hinduism in the Western world.
