Today, September 1st, the Church commemorates Saint Giles, Abbot (650–710), and the Twelve Holy Brothers, Martyrs. While it is a ferial day in the liturgical calendar, these saints remind us of the courage, faith, and endurance of Christians throughout history. 🔹 The Twelve Holy Brothers were not related by blood but were united by their faith in Christ. These early Christians were tortured in North Africa and later sent to Italy, where they were martyred in Potenza, Vinosa, and Sentenciana. Their feast reminds us that baptism makes us true brothers and sisters in Christ — water thicker than blood. 🔹 Saint Giles was born in Athens to noble parents but gave up wealth and honor to pursue a life of solitude, prayer, and holiness. Fleeing to France, he lived in the wilderness for 30 years sustained by herbs, roots, and the milk of a deer — until he was discovered when a hunting party’s arrow struck his hand. Though wounded, he accepted it as God’s will and later founded a monastery that became a great center of pilgrimage, even linked to the Camino de Santiago.
