DVI vs HDMI

In this quick video, I talk through the differences between DVI and HDMI cable and which one you should use. I am making this video because someone asked me on Twitter. So, let's get started! HDMI cable was designed in 2002 and DVI cable in 1999. Size wise, DVI is much bigger than HDMI cable. DVI plug has got 24 pins (sometimes different) of 3 rows deep and one large rectangular pin. In contrast, HDMI plug has got a thin gap that is surrounded by 19 pins. Both have got Mini & Micro version but very uncommon. Nowadays, HDMI is more common than DVI. You could also connect a monitor to a computer that have either HDMI or DVI and vice versa by using an adaptor. HDMI latest version which is 2.1 can support a maximum data rate of 42.6 Gbit/sec. That means it can support a combinator of resolution and refresh rate of 4K at 144 Hz natively or 8K at 120 Hz using Display Stream Compression. It also supports HDR video output, however, with some compromise. On the other hand, DVI has only got a maximum data rate of 9.9 Gbit/sec. Hence, it can only support a combination of resolution and refresh rate of 3840x2400 at 30Hz or 2560x1600 at 60Hz. The final point is that HDMI cable can transfer both audio and video signals but DVI can only transfer video signals. Whether you want to connect your TV or Monitor to your Computer or your TV to soundbar or home theatre, I always recommend HDMI cable.
