The Three-spined Stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus) is a small native fish, that can be identified by the three spines on its dorsal side. They are common and widespread in the UK, usually found in still or slow moving sections of streams or ponds. This species has been very well studied and may have very wide morphological and even life history differences. For example, some 'marine' populations may migrate to sea during winter and return to freshwater in spring to spawn. I have been quite busy here in the UK, but I was feeling energetic today and decided to film and edit a short one minute video of these charismatic little fishes tonight! Thanks to Yue Pan from the Society of Freshwater Science for assisting with lighting.
