Sunita performed on her Camac Ulysse 34-string hybrid harp Program notes: 1. A La Nanita Nana. It is thought to have originated from a song by Jose Ramon Gomir published in Spain in 1904. It is a lullay to the infant Jesus and is one of the most popular songs in the Spanish speaking world, particularly in Mexico and Latin America. 2. I Wonder As I Wander.On July 16, 1933, while in the Appalachian backwoods of North Carolina, folklorist and singer John Jacob Niles heard a fragment of a Christmas song sung by Annie Morgan, a young girl. Niles later added more lines of the melody and 3 verses creating this carol which he first performed in December 1933. 3. Sweet Little Jesus Boy. Composed by Robert MacGimsey in 1934. It was made most famous in 1955 when this song was released by famed gospel singer Mahalia Jackson and it became one of her signature songs. 4. Rise Up, Shepherd and Follow. Composed by slaves or former slaves during the Reconstruction period after the Civil War, this song was passed down orally and first appeard in print in 1891. It gained popularity after being included in the songbook Religious Folksongs of the Negro as Sung on Plantations in 1909. 5. 'Twas in the Moon of Wintertime (Huron Carol) is considered Canada's oldest Christmas carol, probably written in 1642 by Jean de Brebeuf, a Jesuit missionary to the indigenous people at Saint-Maire. Written in the native language of the Wendat people, the carol was based on a traditional French folk song Une Jeaune Pucelle. It appears in a number of modern hymnals with the English lyrics written in 1926 by Jesse Edgar Middleton. 6. We Three Kings was written by the American, John Henry Hopkins Jr. (1820-1891). Hopkins wrote both the lyrics and the music and originally titled the carol, "Kings of Orient". He first published it in a collection of music in 1863. It was the first Christmas carol from the United States to achieve almost worldwide popularity, 7.Deck the Hall with Boughs of Holly (Nos Galan), is a traditional Welsh song. The Welsh harpist, Edward Jones, published this melody in the 18th century. 8.Christ Child's Lullaby (Taladh Christa) Traditional Scottish Gaelic from the Hebrides. 9.Blessed Mary (Muire Bheannaithe) The words to this song are in praise of the Virgin Mary and have been wedded to an old traditional Irish air. 10. The Virgin's Lullaby (Suantra na Maighdine) The air and lyrics were both writtien by Sean Og Tuamo. 11. Christmas Day is Come. This irish carol was collected in teh 18th century from a folk singer in County Wexford by the Irish musicologist, Dr. Gratten Flood.
