In this video, I explore the dramatic Roman frontier of the Lake District, visiting the remarkable remains of the Roman bath house at Ravenglass, Hardknott Roman Fort, and the site of the Roman fort at Ambleside. In Ravenglass, we visit the best-preserved Roman bath house in northern Britain, and follow the line of the Roman road inland to the spectacular Hardknott Fort (known to the Romans as Mediobogdum). Perched high in the mountains, Hardknott is one of the most dramatically located Roman sites in Britain, with breath taking views across the fells, it’s hard to imagine Roman soldiers stationed in such a remote and rugged landscape nearly 2,000 years ago. Finally, we visit the Roman fort at Ambleside, once an important military supply base, situated on the edge of England's largest lake. . Why did Rome build forts here? What role did they play in controlling the western frontier? And what remains can you still see today? Join me as we uncover the history of Rome’s presence in Cumbria and explore some of the Lake District’s most fascinating ancient sites. 🏛 Sites Featured: Ravenglass Roman Bath House Hardknott Roman Fort (Mediobogdum) Ambleside Roman Fort 📍 Location: Lake District, Cumbria, England 0:00 Ravenglass 5:24 Ravenglass Bath House & Roman Fort 8:50 Hardknott Fort 26:33 Ambleside Roman Fort #HardknottFort #RomanFort #LakeDistrict #RomanBritain #DroneFootage
