Friends and community members gathered on Fremont Street to honor Bilal Abdullah, a well-known arrabber who delivered fresh fruit to Baltimore's inner-city neighborhoods. Abdullah, described by friends as "short in stature but large in personality," was killed Tuesday night during a confrontation with police at Pennsylvania and Laurens. According to investigators, Abdullah displayed a gun and threatened officers, leading to an exchange of gunfire. The city police union stated, "The suspect chose to escalate the situation by pulling out a gun and firing on police, not only putting the officers at risk but also the public." The statement also noted that a violent crowd formed, assaulting officers and preventing them from providing care to Abdullah.
