#dentistry #dentalpractice #dentalcare Nitrous Oxide Sedation Procedure: 1. Preparation Review patient’s medical history and obtain consent. Gather all necessary equipment: nasal mask, N2O/O2 delivery system, flow meter, and scavenging system. Ensure the patient is seated comfortably in the dental chair. 2. Initial Assessment Take baseline vital signs (blood pressure, pulse, and respiration rate). Explain the procedure to the patient, including what they might experience. 3. Nasal Mask Placement Place the nasal mask on the patient's nose and ensure it fits comfortably. Adjust the mask straps for a secure fit. 4. Oxygen Administration Begin by administering 100% oxygen for 5 minutes. (6L/min) This helps to establish a baseline and ensure proper oxygenation. 5. N2O Titration Gradually introduce nitrous oxide by increasing the concentration slowly. Start with a low concentration (10-20%) and incrementally increase as needed. Continuously monitor the patient’s response and comfort level. 6. Monitoring During Sedation Observe the patient’s level of consciousness, respiration, and overall comfort. Adjust the nitrous oxide and oxygen levels as needed to maintain desired sedation. 7. Communication Maintain open communication with the patient, asking about their comfort and any sensations they are experiencing. Provide reassurance and make adjustments as necessary. 8. Completion of Procedure Once the dental procedure is complete, gradually reduce the nitrous oxide concentration. Return to 100% oxygen for 5 minutes to flush out any residual nitrous oxide. 9. Post-Sedation Assessment Monitor the patient until they are fully alert and responsive. Take post-sedation vital signs and compare them to baseline. 10. Discharge Instructions Provide the patient with post-sedation care instructions. Ensure the patient is escorted home by a responsible adult if necessary.
