Malayalam playback singer Pradip Somasundaran shares his inspiring musical journey in this exclusive interview on Yes 27. In this conversation with Rejaneesh VR, he talks about his career, reality show experience, film songs, and the stories behind some of his most memorable performances. Born on January 26, 1967, in Nelluvaya, Thrissur, Kerala, Pradip Somasundaran is a well-known Indian playback singer who has sung nearly 100 songs across Malayalam, Tamil and Hindi languages. Apart from being a singer, he is also an academician and has served as a college principal. His musical journey started at a young age with training in Carnatic music under Geetha Rani and later under V. Gopalan in Thrissur. By the age of sixteen, he had already started performing on stage and gradually built a strong foundation in classical and light music. Pradip got his big break in Malayalam cinema through legendary music director Raveendran, who introduced him with the song “Samayam Manoharam” in the film Ezhuthachan in 1993. After that, he worked with several renowned composers including Johnson, Mohan Sithara, and Ilaiyaraaja in Malayalam cinema. One of the major turning points in his career came in 1996 when he won the Lata Mangeshkar Trophy as the best male singer in the national music competition Meri Awaaz Suno, which was telecast by Doordarshan. The competition was jointly conducted by legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar and filmmaker Yash Chopra’s Metavision. The show later became one of the earliest forms of music reality competitions in India. Throughout his career, Pradip Somasundaran has worked in multiple musical styles including Carnatic music, ghazals, devotional songs, and film playback singing. Apart from Malayalam films, he also entered Telugu cinema through music director Sandeep Chowta, singing for the film Bujjigadu directed by Puri Jagannadh. In addition to film songs, he has also composed and released independent music albums. His international album “Koti Pranam” was released in 2007 for the Art of Living Foundation. Later, in 2011 he released the Malayalam musical project “Mazhanritham”, collaborating with singers like Gayatri Asokan, Franco Simon, Shahabaz Aman, and actor Manoj K. Jayan. In this interview, Pradip Somasundaran also talks about the story behind songs like “Oru Murai Vanthu”, the experience of singing for different composers, and his journey from stage performances to film music.
