FieldFox VNA Calibration - Unknown Thru vs SOLT

In this video, I describe the calibration type Unknown Thru or SOLR, and compare to the traditional SOLT calibration. The focus of this video is Keysight's FieldFox, but it is applicable to PNA and other Keysight network analyzers. The main difference is that SOLT assumes a zero-length (same as flush thru) or defined-thru. In the case of defined thru, the delay and loss are defined. An assumption is made that the thru has perfect match. SOLR or unknown thru measures that adapter's S-parameters and removes the effects of it. So SOLR is a more general and accurate calibration. Note to PNA Users: As of the publication date of this video (July 2020), PNA's Cal Wizard GUI still refers to SOLT unknown thru. The PNA team has plans to modify that to say SOLR unknown thru, but it has not been done yet.
