PANCREAS - This new episode of the program “Draw with Me” is dedicated to the anatomy of the pancreas. The pancreas is an elongated, retroperitoneal gland located transversely across the posterior abdominal wall, extending from the duodenum to the spleen. It is both an exocrine and endocrine organ. Anatomically, it is divided into four parts: head, neck, body, and tail. The head lies within the C-shaped curve of the duodenum and includes the uncinate process, which hooks posterior to the superior mesenteric vessels. The exocrine portion, composed of acinar cells, produces digestive enzymes that are conveyed via the main pancreatic duct (duct of Wirsung) and the accessory duct (duct of Santorini) into the duodenum through the major duodenal papilla. The endocrine portion, represented by the islets of Langerhans, secretes insulin, glucagon, somatostatin, and pancreatic polypeptide directly into the bloodstream. The pancreas receives arterial supply mainly from branches of the splenic and pancreaticoduodenal arteries and drains venously into the portal system.
