The fast-moving dance is performed by females who move their feet between long bamboo poles that are knocked together nimbly by onlooking males. The females' complex footwork is contrasted with their expressive arm movements. Tinikling is said to be named after the Tikling bird—a long-legged bird found in the Philippines. The bird belongs to a number of rail species such as the Slaty-breasted rail, the buff-banded rail, and the barred rail. The Tinikling dance originated during the Spanish occupation in the Philippines—on the island of Leyte. The farmers usually set up bamboo traps to protect their fields from Tikling birds, yet the birds dodged their traps. Locals copied the bird's movement and that's how this fast-moving dance was born. However, according to folklore, the dance began during the Spanish colonial era when locals were put to work on large plantations. Those who refused the orders of the King or worked too slowly were subjected to a harsh punishment: to stand in between two bamboo poles. The poles were then thwacked together to beat the native's feet. To avoid this—the workers would jump when the two poles were about to be thwacked. This practice of jumping between the poles in the course of time transformed from a challenge into an exquisite dance. Thank you for watching! Don't forget to subscribe!
