Struggling to tell whether a chemical reaction is a redox reaction or not? 💡 Learn how to identify oxidation and reduction reactions fast by following oxidation number changes — perfect for high school, college, university, AP, IB, and A-Level Chemistry! Having trouble understanding redox reactions and how to decide if a reaction involves oxidation and reduction? In this video, I’ll show you how to know if a reaction is redox or not by quickly assigning oxidation numbers (oxidation states) to each atom and checking whether the oxidation number goes up (oxidation) or down (reduction). This video focuses on the decision-making process, not memorizing rules, and is designed to help you work through redox questions efficiently. Important: This video assumes you already know the rules for assigning oxidation numbers. If you’re not confident with those rules yet, make sure to watch my oxidation number rules video first — the link is provided below. We’ll start with a short reminder of what a redox reaction is and why oxidation and reduction always occur together. Then, I’ll walk you through three example reactions, showing how I quickly assign oxidation numbers and immediately spot whether oxidation and reduction are happening. In this lesson, you’ll see how to: 1️⃣ Assign oxidation numbers efficiently without writing out every rule 2️⃣ Compare oxidation numbers before and after the reaction 3️⃣ Identify oxidation (increase in oxidation number) and reduction (decrease in oxidation number) 4️⃣ Decide confidently if a reaction is redox or not Each example is explained step by step, helping you develop speed and confidence when solving redox reaction questions — a key skill for AP, IB, A-Level, college, and university chemistry and for future topics like electrochemistry. By the end of this video, you will: ✔ Know how to quickly check if a reaction is a redox reaction ✔ Be able to track oxidation number changes accurately ✔ Identify oxidation and reduction without overthinking ✔ Feel more confident answering redox reaction questions Chapters --------------------------- 0:00 Introduction 0:30 Example 1: Combustion of methane 1:00 How to use oxidation numbers for deciding if a reaction is redox or not 1:48 Example 2: Reaction of permanganate with oxalate 3:24 Example 3: Double Replacement Reaction 4:43 Recap and final thoughts ---------------------------- Stay connected!
