In this video we make a nano-emulsion of #CBD rich #hemp oil in water using a #Hielscher #UP400St ultra-sonicator. We then measure the nano-emulsion using a NANO-flex DLS. We prepare 7.5 grams of CBD hemp oil, 37.5 grams of #StuphCorp (https://stuphcorp.com) emulsifier and 205 grams of water. We heat all materials to 60 degrees Celsius - 140 degrees Fahrenheit. For nano-emulsification we use a Hielscher UP400St sonicator with a 14mm probe. We set the amplitude to 100% in order to #sonicate at 99 micron. First, we add the CBD hemp oil to the StuphCorp #emulsifier. Then, we start the UP400St sonication and slowly add the mix to the water. There are 3000 milligrams of CBD hemp oil per 100 grams of final #emulsion. The emulsion turns #translucent very quickly. After less than 3 minutes we have a nice, uniform and translucent #nanoemulsion. "How do we know, that this is an actual NANO-emulsion?" We use a NANO-flex DLS particle size measurement system! DLS - Dynamic Light Scattering is used to characterize colloids, such as emulsions and dispersions within a size range of 0.3 nanometers to 10 micrometers. DLS is suitable for concentrations of up to 40 volume-percent. Hence, we can measure the emulsion at full concentration - without dilution. The measurement results show a very narrow, volume-weighed particle size distribution in the range from 9 to 40 nanometers. 95 percent of all particles are below 28 nanometers. You can add a flow cell to this UP400St ultrasonicator setup. Using a flow cell, you can process larger volumes for #production.
