Streatham Jewish Cemetery, located on Rowan Road, London SW16 was opened in 1915 by the Polish burial society Hesed V’Emet (“Kindness and Truth”). It is the only London Jewish cemetery located south of the River Thames. The cemetery was consecrated on 14 November 1915, with foundation stones laid for an ohel (prayer house). The current ohel, built in 1932, is a striking whitewashed building with a pediment-shaped top. The majority of burials here are those of Ashkenazi Jews who settled in the Soho area of London working as tailors, cabinetmakers, and shopkeepers. Since 1968, members of the South London Liberal Synagogue have also been buried here, in a dedicated corner of the cemetery. Features of the Cemetery: Designed with tightly packed pathways and rows of tombstones. Has a section with Commonwealth War Graves for WWII service personnel The cemetery contrasts in style with neighbouring Streatham Park Cemetery, which it adjoins but has a separate entrance.
