History Millipede is a fixed shooter arcade game developed by Atari, Inc. and released in November 1982. It was designed as a sequel to the highly successful Centipede game, featuring a similar playstyle but with additional challenges and a broader variety of enemies. The game was later ported to the Atari 2600 console in March 1984, allowing home gamers to experience the arcade thrill. The Atari 2600 version was developed by Dave Staugas, who managed to capture the essence of the arcade experience within the technical limitations of the home console. Despite being released during the precipice of the video game crash of 1983, Millipede stood out for its engaging gameplay and became a memorable title for the system. Scenario In Millipede, players enter a mystical forest overrun by a variety of insects, with the titular millipede being the primary antagonist. The player assumes the role of the Archer, an elf tasked with defending the enchanted woods using magic arrows. The narrative sets a scene where the Archer must protect his mushroom garden from the onslaught of the millipede and other creatures like spiders, bees, earwigs, and more. The game's scenario adds depth to the gameplay, as players are not just shooting at targets but are immersed in a battle to reclaim the forest. The presence of DDT bombs within the game provides a strategic element, allowing players to set off explosions to clear large sections of the infestation. How to Play? The objective of Millipede is to score as many points as possible by destroying the millipede as it advances from the top of the screen towards the player's area at the bottom. The millipede moves horizontally and drops down one level each time it encounters a mushroom or the edge of the screen. Shooting a segment of the millipede splits it, creating more heads and increasing the challenge. Players control the Archer with a joystick, moving left and right and firing arrows upwards. The game employs a single fire button, which can be held for rapid-fire. Each insect enemy has unique behaviors and requires different strategies to defeat. For example, spiders move in a zig-zag pattern, bees drop mushrooms and require two shots to eliminate, and earwigs make mushrooms poisonous, causing the millipede to charge directly towards the bottom of the screen. The game starts with three lives, and players earn extra lives every 15,000 points. The challenge increases as players progress, with more enemies appearing and the millipede moving faster. Strategic use of DDT bombs and managing the mushroom field are key to achieving high scores and surviving the insect onslaught.
