(30 Apr 1995) English/Nat Many Americans marked the 20th anniversary of the fall of Saigon today (Sunday) by visiting the Vietnam War Memorial in Washington. One group of Vietnamese Americans marked the occasion by protesting against the Communist regime in Vietnam. They accuse the government of human rights abuses against supporters of the old regime. For these Vietnamese the 20th anniversary of the fall of Saigon is a time for mourning not celebration. South Vietnamese Army veterans and supporters of the Southern government, thousands of them fled to the US after the Communists victory. Many still feel betrayed by the Americans decision to withdraw - for them the war is not over. 500 Vietnamese and a number of American veterans marched today (Sunday) to the White House. They paid tribute to the old American backed regime and demanded more acknowledgement of their suffering during the war. Ex-Director of the CIA William Colby spoke of the forgotten victims of the war. SOUNDBITE: "It's a great honor and a great pleasure for me to be here to give honor to our South-East Asian comrades and colleagues in this struggle. We meet, appropriately, right next to this famous wall, from the Vietnam War.Vietnamese, Montagnards, Lao, Mong, Cambodians who died in that war, the war would be very much longer, and I think we must do honor to those people in the same manner as we do honor to those Americans who died in that war." SUPER CAPTION: William Colby, ex-Director of the CIA One American veteran believes the US government still has a duty to the Southern Vietnamese. SOUNDBITE: The march is for the freedom of the Vietnamese people , the war didn't end twenty years ago, it ended democracy for the Vietnamese people and what we are trying to do today, is get our government's attention to get freedom for the Vietnamese people. They did it in Korea, and they have to do it for the Vietnamese people. SUPER CAPTION: Michael Dreigner, Vietnam Veteran According to official Vietnamese figures at least 223-thousand South Vietnamese soldiers and 1.1 million (m) Communist Vietnamese soldiers died during the conflict together with some 2 (m) million civilians from both sides. But for a new generation of Vietnamese Americans it is still too early to make peace with the victors.
