There are two words, for a room, that are widely used in the Palestinian and Levantine dialects. ġurfe غرفة and oda أوضة ġurfe غرفة – is also the word we use in classical Arabic ġurfe غرفة The second word is oda أوضة most of my students prefer to use oda, since it’s easier to pronounce. By the way oda is Turkish and we use it in spoken Arabic. Choose what you like, but I’ll go with oda since it’s easier to pronounce. ġurfeغرفة Odaأوضة Let’s say that you’re visiting a friend’s house. As a visitor you sit in the living room. The living room is isaloan الصالون also, salon as you can tell it’s not Arabic. Probably, you might need to use the bathroom the bathroom is: il ḥammam الحمام To ask where is the bath room, wain il ḥammam? وين الحمام؟ Learn this question, wain il ḥammam? cause you need it wherever you go, right? Now, whether you’re invited for just to a cup of coffee Finjan qahweفنجان قهوة or a dinner 3ashaعشاء the host will be busy preparing food, drinks or snacks in the kitchen. The Kitchen is matbaḫ مطبخ It’s culturally expected, mainly from women, to offer some help. So, go and ask: How can I help? Kif ba’dar asa3ed?كيف بقدر اساعد؟ Kif is howكيف ba’dar can Iبقدر asa3ed helpاساعد Kif ba’dar asa3ed? Usually the answer you get, no thank you, la’ shukranلا شكراً La’ is noلا Shukran thanks (lesson 2 explains how we say thank you, make sure to watch it). Insist to help, it’s nice and culturally expected. Also, it’s good to offer help with cleaning up later. If you’re invited for a meal you would sit in the dining room odet issufraأوضة السفرة and sit around the table tawlet issufraطاولة السفرة If you noticed oda was changed to odet when I added a noun to it. I will explain all this in a separate lesson about the Noun Construction in a future lesson. For us who are living in the house, we spend most of our time, in what we call the sitting room, ila3deالقعدة Usually it has a TV, and it’s less formal than the living room. ila3deالقعدة We also spend time with family at the at the balcony, and guess what we call it, il balconالبلكون yes, it’s also not Arabic Another room is the bed room, odet inom أوضة النوم Other houses have other facilities such as The laundry room odet il ġaseelأوضة الغسيل Around the house you might have a garden bustan or jnaineبستان أو جنينة Stairs darajدرج could be outside or inside the house. So, let’s review what we’ve learned. The living room – isaloanالصالون The bathroom - il ḥammam الحمام The kitchen – il matbaḫالمطبخ The dining room - odet issufra أوضة السفرة The dining table - tawlet issufraطاولة السفرة Sitting room - ila3deالقعدة The balcony – il balconالبلكون The bed room - odet inomأوضة النوم The laundry room - odet il ġaseel أوضة الغسيل A garden - bustan or jnaineبستان او جنينة Stairs – Darajدرج Visiting an Arab friend’s home is very special!
