Sea Otter Celebrates Her Birthday, Thanks To Rescuers

#seaotter #babyotter #kpassionate This sea otter was only a day old when she caught the attention of some fishermen near Anchor Point, Alaska. She was so young that she still had her umbilical cord. The fishermen watched her for an hour and quickly realized that she was on her own. They alerted the Alaska SeaLife Center, who rescued the dehydrated pup and quickly transferred her to their rehabilitation center in Seward, Alaska. Sea otter pups normally spend 6-7 months with their moms, learning how survival skills like foraging and grooming. That responsibility fell upon the staff at Alaska SeaLife Center as well as other facilities such as the Vancouver Aquarium. I was one of the lucky marine biologists tasked with raising and rehabilitating this adorable marine mammal who was soon named Tazlina after the southeastern Alaska region near the place where she was rescued. I spent countless weeks teaching her how to eat and groom. Many of these grooming sessions took place while she slept. Without the skills to survive in the wild, the NOAA and the Alaskan Department of Wildlife determined she was a poor candidate for release and deemed her non-releasable.
