First came a report that Ethiopian jets hit the Asmara airport in two waves, the first of which involved four rockets. Hours later, the Ethiopian foreign ministry confirmed the attack, saying it was in reprisal for an Eritrean air attack on the airport at Mekele, capital of the Ethiopian state of Tigre which left five wounded. Eritrea asserts that frontiers drawn up during the Italian colonial period at the start of the century show the disputed zones are part of its territory but which Ethiopia incorporated into its Tigre state. The conflict has been escalating since mid-May, fuelling fears that it could turn the Horn of Africa into a war zone.
