How to fix compacted soil WITHOUT tilling.

👇 Don’t dig your soil! There’s a way better way to reduce compaction! Tilling or digging up your soil to loosen it will work. BUT every time you heavily dig or till your soil, you’re ripping apart fungal hyphae, killing worms, and introducing a surplus of oxygen that causes bacteria to go into a feeding frenzy and “use up” your organic matter. Over time, this will deplete your soil. Also tilling can easily create a layer of hardpan that will severely affect your plants’ ability to grow. So how to reduce compaction without tilling? Cover crops! Planting cover crops has SO many benefits besides just reducing compaction. Follow along if you want to know more about cover crops because I have so many videos coming about how to use them cheaply and effectively. Lots of crops can help with compaction, but daikon radish (or aerifi, or tillage radish) is the BEST. It has a super long and thick root that penetrates deep into the soil. If you let it decompose it provides lots of food for bacteria and worms, and will become beautiful deep rich organic soil for your garden. But you shouldn’t plant it on its own! Daikon will benefit heavily from a nitrogen fixer + you can achieve even greater success with a diverse cover crop mix. I usually use 10+ species in my mixes.
