Lyrics: I’m standin’ at the altar on the eve of wedded bliss. I know that I’m about to marry someone quite extraordinary: Kris, you’re my sunny honey Kris. In my life you’re a warm and gentle kiss. You’re like all my favorite things combined in fine harmony. You’re my mountain top, my poem, my symphony. I love you for your tears on summit slopes at alpenglow. I love you for your innocence so true. I love you for the smiles you flash on fairways that we know, for all the things you do. Mostly, I love you. You’re my Kris. You’re my strong and steady, always ready Kris. And I never knew that love could be like this with my fancy dancin’, sweet romancin’ miss, oo. So it comes as no surprise that I am feelin’ so fine, for I know that I’m so lucky that you’re mine. Doo-ee-ah-t’n doo-ee-oo. Background Statement from Composer: When I (John) married Kris in Seattle in 1995, I knew I wanted music to be an important part of the ceremony. I also knew I wanted to declare my love for her musically. And I thought a surprise would be fun. We had hired a singer to sing a Puccini aria. I told Kris there was an additional Italian song that would be nice, and she was fine with that. To keep the secret intact, on the wedding program I listed the song as “La Sorpresa" (The Surprise) and the composer as Giovanni Sposo (John Groom). Kris knew some German, but no Italian. So the first time she became aware the song was meant for her came when the singer sang “someone quite extraordinary: Kris.” It was a very nice moment. And I’m sure when Kris again hears the song on Valentine’s Day 2026 in a heartwarming performance by the amazing Macy Grace Vinther and Martha Violett, she’ll have another very nice moment.
