We recently pulled these Pilosocereus azureus out of their original mix — and the issue wasn’t rot. It was the opposite. The soil was too dry, too lean, and not moisture-retentive enough to support steady growth. On top of that, having 3–4 plants crowded into one pot meant root competition and limited space to size up. When columnar cactus don’t have consistent access to moisture and room to root out, they don’t grow — they just survive. We separated them and transplanted them into our proprietary soil blend, formulated in-house for balanced growth. Our mix combines pumice and lava rock for aeration and drainage, organic material for controlled moisture retention, and a measured time-release fertilizer to provide steady nutrients during active growth. Drainage matters. But so does hydration. And so does nutrition. That balance is what builds thicker columns, stronger root systems, and healthier color over time. If your blue cactus isn’t sizing up, your soil might be the limiting factor. Our nursery-formulated blend is available on our website (pootscactusnursery.com) for those who want the same mix we use in our greenhouse. Have you ever changed your soil and seen a dramatic difference in growth?
