Today however, Belarusian is swiftly losing ground to Russian, with Belarus's own president denigrating those who speak the native language as backwards and incapable of achieving anything. Centuries of Russian imperialism, Soviet repression, and now their president's close cooperation with Putin's regime have seen the use of Belarusian politicised as a symbol of those fighting against Lukashenka's repressive authority.
