Some of the names that trench foot was known by during the cold winter of 1914–1915 were "frostbite, chilled feet, effects of exposure, N.Y.D. feet, or feet cases" (The Medical Front no date). The main thing that made the French, American, and British ditches different from the Austrian and German trenches was that they were on lower ground. This feature of the land would mean two things: first, water would collect quickly when it rained, and second, one wouldn't have to go up very far to naturally reach water. For people who lived close to the sea, Trench foot was especially easy to get. In fact, they only had to dig a half-meter before the ditches were full of water.
