In this video we’re diving into one of my favorite topics — how to feed your aquarium plants without adding bottled fertilizers. I’ll show you exactly what I use to create a nutritious substrate that keeps plants thriving for months, even years. 🪴 My Aquarium Substrate Recipe 1. Biofilter Base (for bacteria colonies) Use around 5cm bottom layer of: • River pebbles • Fine lava rock • Fine ceramic media • Expanded clay pebbles ⸻ 2. Clay-Based Substrate I use local Vietnamese brands (only available locally), but here are great alternatives: • ADA Aqua Soil Amazonia • Tropica Aquarium Soil • Fluval Stratum • Brightwell Aquatics Rio Escuro • Oliver Knott Nature Soil • Mr. Aqua Aquarium Soil • Dennerle Scaper’s Soil • UP Aqua Aqua Sand/Soil • Seachem Flourite (Dark or Red) • Controsoil (SL-Aqua) ⸻ 3. Vermicast • Apply a thin layer (0.5–1 cm) by eye. ⸻ 4. Root Tabs / Plant Fertilizer Granules • Use sparingly, and only if planting carpeting plants (e.g., Monte Carlo, Hairgrass). ⸻ 5. Coconut Coir • Another thin layer (0.5–1 cm) to help with structure and root support. ⸻ 6. Regular Aquarium Soil (Top Layer) • Choose any affordable, good-quality aquarium soil for the top layer. ⸻ 7. Natural Sand (Optional) • Add 3–5 cm if needed, for aesthetic or biotope-style setups. Recommended maintenance for a new nano low-tech tank: First 3 days: Replace 50% of the water every 6 hours. Days 4, 5, 6, 7: Replace 50% of the water every 12 hours. Second week: Replace 50% of the water every 24 hours. Third week: Replace 50% of the water every 3 days. From the fourth week onward, you can change 30% to 50% of the water once a week*. (*Note: Sometimes starting a new nano aquarium can take more than a month. This usually happens when you use a large piece of driftwood in your scape and slow-growing plants like Bucephalandra and Anubias. Therefore, it’s recommended to always include fast-growing plants in your scape alongside others. The key is to persistently perform water changes while adding beneficial bacteria and water conditioner (if using tap water). Eventually, your aquarium will stabilize its bio-balance and function as a self-sustaining ecosystem! Remember that each aquarium is an individual biosystem and may behave differently, so the recommendations here are based on personal experience from creating and maintaining over 30 aquariums.
