Steam trams began running through the Austrian city of Innsbruck in 1891. The electric Stubaital Railway to Fulpmes opened in 1904, and the tram lines were subsequently electrified and expanded. However, it wasn't until 1983 that the Stubaital Railway was connected to the city center via the tram network. The closure plans of the 1970s and 1990s failed to materialize, and in recent years, several new lines have even been opened. The two interurban lines represent a special feature: The Stubaital Railway, 18 kilometers long, serves several villages south of the city. Due to its location on the hillside, the railway offers impressive views of the surrounding mountains. The eight-kilometer-long Mittelgebirgsbahn (Line 6) was repeatedly threatened with closure due to low passenger numbers. Since 2024, it has once again been connected directly to Innsbruck's city center as part of the new "Waldbahn" (Forest Tram) marketing scheme. All lines are operated exclusively by Flexity Outlook ("Cityrunner") low-floor trams, which were delivered between 2007 and 2020. Lines 2 and 5 can be operated with dobule sets during rush-hour. 0:00 Intro 0:41 Trams in Innsbruck 8:00 Line 6: Forest Tram 10:38 Line STB: Stubaitalbahn
