53년 만에 다시 잇는 동해북부선, "경제 활성화 대륙 철도망" 견인 Seoul renewed its commitment to reconnect inter-Korean railways. The country plans to get things started by injecting funds to focus on the Donghae Line reconstruction. Hong Yoo explains further. On the second anniversary of the Pamunjeom Declaration, the South Korean government held an event at Jejin Train Station to celebrate the Donghae Northern Line reconstruction project. Seoul's Unification Minister, Kim Yeon-chul, said the project will revitalize the Korean economy. "Opening the era of economic peace on the Korean peninsula starts with the construction of the Donghae Northern Line." The Minister also believes that connecting Gangwon-do Province with metropolitan areas will foster tourism and upgrade the country's transport infrastructure. Together, officials from the Unification and Transportation Ministries, donated railway sleepers that will be used to reconnect Gangneung and Jejin, a city near the North Korean border. The last railway connection between the two cities was severed some 53 years ago. "By connecting these two cities that are 100km apart, the east-coast line will be the longest railway on the Korean peninsula and will connect Busan and Dooman river." The Transportation Minister said the railway network coul spread even further into Eurasia when inter-Korean economic cooperation begins. During the ceremony, honorary train tickets for trips from Jejin to Berlin were given to two residents in Gangwon-do Province. "It would be nice to be able to travel on a train to Berlin. I think connecting the railway could unify the Korean peninsula and improve inter-Korean relations." "We have been waiting for this for a long time. Please start off the project quickly." After the ceremony, government officials visited the Baebong tunnel, 50km away from Jejin station. Trains used to go through this tunnel but it is currently closed off with iron gates. The South Korean government has pledged to cooperate closely with local communities and aim for construction to start by the end of 2021.
