The CGI Paradox

In this video essay, I wanna talk about a seemingly weird contradiction that I've been seeing in Hollywood of late which I would call The CGI Paradox. So, the paradox is this. Why does it feel like CGI is getting worse, although technology and computer power is getting better? I've been thinking about this of late. Sometimes you watch an old film from the 90s like The Matrix or the original Jurassic Park and you begin to realize that the visual effects and CGI from that era seems significantly better than what we have now. And this is something that should never be the case. But why does the general consensus feel that? And in the video, I explore the evolution of CGI from the dinosaurs in Jurassic Park to Gollum from Lord of the Rings. Davy Jones from Pirates of the Caribbean, all the way to the latest Avengers films. How production timelines and tight scheduling impact the quality of CGI and how good CGI is still around but is always invisible to us.
