This video shows a scenic mountain drive through the beautiful countryside of Japan’s Kii Peninsula. The journey begins near Kumano Nachi Taisha, one of the famous Kumano Sanzan (Three Grand Shrines of Kumano) in Wakayama Prefecture. Kumano Nachi Taisha has long been an important spiritual destination for pilgrims and is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range.” Nearby is the famous Nachi Falls, one of Japan’s most celebrated waterfalls. After leaving the city of Shingu, the road soon passes through a tunnel and the scenery suddenly changes. The landscape opens into deep mountains and beautiful rivers typical of the Kii Peninsula. The drive continues north into Totsukawa Village in Nara Prefecture, the largest village in Japan by land area. Totsukawa is known for its vast forests, clear rivers, and remote mountain scenery. This region has long been associated with the historic Kumano pilgrimage routes. The video continues along the national highway through the mountains before approaching the area near Gojo City in Nara Prefecture. Enjoy a relaxing 90-minute drive through one of Japan’s most beautiful mountain regions. 00:00 Start near Kumano Nachi Taisha 03:36 Shingu City Streets 09:25 Leaving the City 20:59 Mountains of the Kii Peninsula 35:58 Entering Totsukawa Village 51:07 Scenic Drive through Totsukawa 63:31 Deep Mountain Roads 66:39 Approaching Gojo City
