Trams (streetcars, for the 'muricans) are cool. But not only that, they can be an incredibly useful and game-changing tool in a city's public transport arsenal – and that's why I'm one of the many people who thinks we need to bring trams back to the streets of Newcastle, Gateshead and beyond. In an ideal world, every city over a modest minimum population threshold would get its own tram and other rail upgrades. I know we don't live in an ideal world, but please just indulge me for eight minutes of your time. Disclaimer: I'm not a transit or civil planner, engineer or economist. My scrawlings on a map of where I'd like to see trams go may be entirely unfeasible for reasons I'm blithely unaware of. The example is meant to be taken as illustrative, nothing more.
