One of the attributes that contribute to Elvis’ longevity was his ability to cross genres without any sign of discomfort in any. However, there is little doubt that he shone most brightly in the Gospel area, primarily because it was that which was closest to his heart. This influence can even be heard when he was tackling other genres with that arrangement and delivery of “Bridge Over Troubled Water” being one such striking example. Although gospel songs were recorded by Elvis throughout his career, there were only three recording sessions dedicated to producing such an album. These sessions, all in Nashville, in 1969, 1966 and 1971 produced some of Elvis’ finest studio work and this had an add on effect to many of the secular recordings at these sessions. The first of these sessions, in October 1960, produced the album “His Hand In Mine” and as such these sessions would forever be referred to by that album title. Elvis had now completed two standard and two soundtrack recording sessions since his discharge from the armed services, and with his public return complete, it was now perhaps felt an appropriate time to approach an album in a particular niche. Fourteen tracks were recorded on that 30 October 1960 evening, with just a single secular track, “Surrender” being recorded. The recording which would become the title track of the album was the second track recorded and after five takes it was felt that the fifth would become the master take. However, on reflection this was rejected, due to dissatisfaction with the ending and the decision was taken to create a spliced master. This was achieved by using the ending of take four and placing onto the end of take five. As with all of these videos, to get the most out of the re-edited audio, I highly recommend you use ear /headphones and turn the volume up as much as you dare!
