100 Years of Jacksonville Radio

On Thanksgiving Day 1925, WJAX lit up 600 kWh with 1,000 watts, becoming Jacksonville’s first radio station. (At least it's first station that stayed on the air for more than a few months!) This city-owned station broadcast local news and events, gave local performers a larger audience, and brought the world to Jacksonville via the NBC radio network. In the 1920s and '30s, people listened only with table-top sets. Radios became standard equipment in cars by the '40s. By the middle of the century, there were a half-dozen AM radio stations in town competing for a growing audience.
