An empty road by the railway tracks. A car slows down at the crossing, stops — engine still running. A woman gets out. Opens the trunk. Pulls out a bag. The bag is moving. She places it on the rails. Doesn't look back. Drives away. Inside the bag — a white cat named Mara. And her two kittens. Too small to escape on their own. Mara tears through the bag with her teeth and claws until she breaks free. But she doesn't run. She stays. She fights to get her babies out. The fabric won't give. She stands on the tracks and screams. Cars pass. Nobody stops. Then — a distant shape on the tracks. A train. Mara screams louder. Owen was walking along the path beside the tracks. He heard her. He looked up — a white cat, a bag on the rails, a train closing in. He ran. One second at the crossing. He grabbed the bag with one hand, Mara with the other, and jumped. The train passed inches away. They lay on the grass by the embankment — Owen, Mara, and the bag. Still moving. Owen untied the knot. Two kittens crawled out into the light — one ginger, one white — and Mara threw herself at them. Couldn't stop. Licked them both at once. Owen sat in the grass and watched. All three of them. Alive. Then Mara looked at him. Long. Directly in the eyes. "It's okay," said Owen quietly. "Everything's okay." Mara blinked slowly. And lay down beside her kittens. The security camera at the crossing recorded everything. The police were already on their way. Owen carried the kittens home in his jacket pockets — ginger on the left, white on the right. Mara walked beside him the whole way. No leash. Just beside him. "You're staying," said Owen. Not a question. A decision. That evening — four of them on one sofa.
