Facebook video shows aftermath of Philando Castile shooting by police in Falcon Heights, Minnesota

A man shot by a St. Anthony police officer during a traffic stop in Falcon Heights, Minn. Wednesday night has died, family members confirmed to Fox 9. A graphic video streamed live on Facebook by the victim’s girlfriend captured the aftermath of shooting from inside the car. Sgt. Jon Mangseth, interim chief of the St. Anthony Police Department, confirmed at least one St. Anthony police officer shot a man inside his car during a traffic stop at Larpenteur Avenue and Fry Street at approximately 9:00 p.m. Family members identified the victim as 32-year-old Philando Castile. Castile had worked for St. Paul Public Schools as a cafeteria supervisor at J.J. Hill Montessori School for the past 10 years. Castile’s girlfriend, Diamond "Lavish" Reynolds, and her daughter were also inside the car, but were not injured. Mangseth said he did not yet know why police initially stopped the vehicle. Castile was taken to the Hennepin County Medical Center, where family says he was pronounced dead. No police officers were injured in the shooting, Mangseth said. Mangseth said he is aware of a Facebook video taken by Reynolds inside the car shortly after the shooting took place. In the nearly 10-minute long video, Reynolds tells the camera she and Castile were pulled over for a broken tail light. She says Castile was reaching for his ID and wallet when he was shot. The officer, who is shown in the video with his gun still drawn, is heard saying, "I told him not to reach for it. I told him to get his hand off it." In the video, Reynolds says the officer asked the victim to get his license and registration. She says the victim informed the officer his license was in his wallet, but he had also pistol on him because he is licensed to carry. “Please officer, don’t tell me you just did this to him,” Reynolds said. “You shot four bullets into him sir.” Reynolds is then ordered to get out of the car by another officer. As she exits the vehicle, the video shows several officers with their guns drawn and an officer holding her daughter. In the final moments of the video, Reynolds' daughter is heard in the background comforting her mom. “It’s okay,” she says. “I’m right here with you.” A handgun was recovered at the scene. The officer involved has been placed on standard administrative leave, Mangseth said in a second press conference early Thursday morning. The Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is investigating the incident.
