Until Joy Xie founded her school's Linguistics Club, she was never really into languages. Through linguistics experiments and colorful drawings, Joy shares her journey of finding her nerdy community and discovering her love of language. Along the way, she uncovers how exploring language can bring people together and reveal new perspectives on the world around us. Joy Xie is a Senior at Dos Pueblos High School. She is the founder and president of Dos Pueblos’ Linguistics Club (among other clubs), where she regularly draws wugs and conducts linguistics experiments on her unsuspecting club members. As the child of Chinese immigrants, Joy became interested in the differences that exist in language at a young age, but it wasn’t until she was introduced to linguistics olympiads that she became hooked. In her free time, Joy enjoys annoying her friends with puns and listening to German-language musicals. Her non-linguistics hobbies include solving physics problems, juggling, and generally being a nerd. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
