Publishing misconduct presents a serious and growing threat to the integrity of the scholarly record and a critical challenge to publishers, institutions, and information professionals. Although not a new phenomenon, non-traditional business models and technological innovations such as generative AI, have together created an environment which makes publishing misconduct easier to carry out than ever before. Accordingly, publishers and research institutions are now faced with the challenge of investigating issues of alleged and actual publishing misconduct at hitherto unprecedented scale and complexity. Handling an overwhelming number of cases of potential misconduct not only requires significant investment in staff and systems but also creates issues of publishing policy. These include policy concerning retraction or removal of article, expressions of concern, post-acceptance author changes, and if and when to contact institutions regarding publishing misconduct issues, all of which have implications for publishers, research institutions and librarians alike. In this session we will discuss current publishing misconduct issues from the point of view of research libraries and librarians, and examine ways in which librarians and publishers can work together to manage these challenges and more effectively protect the integrity of the scholarly record.
