There are songs that are written down, and there are songs that are sung, forgotten, and remembered again long before they ever reach the page. Down by the Sally Gardens belongs to the latter. It survives today as a poem by W. B. Yeats, first published in 1889 — an attempt, as Yeats himself described it, to reconstruct an old song from fragments imperfectly remembered. Yeats recalled hearing a few lines sung softly by an elderly woman in the village of Ballisodare, County Sligo. The complete song, if it ever existed, has not survived. What remains is memory shaped into verse — not a faithful transcription, but a careful listening. In Yeats’s version, the voice is quiet and restrained: a moment of love recalled too late, advice offered gently and ignored in youth. Like many songs carried by oral tradition, Down by the Sally Gardens does not explain itself. The idea of expressing stories through music — without words, without lyrics — has always fascinated me, and led me to create this series. My version of "Songs Without Words" brings together melodies from different cultures, eras, and traditions — from classical music to operatic arias, from popular songs to folk melodies — curated into distinct sub-collections, each exploring a different musical heritage, carefully arranged, adapted, and improvised.
