Flaws with the California Juvenile Justice System

Student documentary by Kelly OConnor, Vanessa Avila-Suarez, and Zaheerah Saafir that speaks out against the punitive nature of the California juvenile justice system. Politicians, human rights activists, psychologists, and parents argue against Proposition 21 (passed in March of 2000), which allows children as young as 14 to be charged as adults and sentenced to live without parole, even for non-violent crimes. They discuss the impulsive, inchoate but inherently good nature of adolescents, and describe the negative effects the California juvenile justice system has on adolescent development and adulthood. They further express disdain over how California spends more money on the prison system than on education (California spends $220,000 to incarcerate a child as opposed to $10,000 spent on education), arguing that education is exactly what the state needs to lower the crime rate in its cities and ensure a brighter future.
