Tracklist: 00:00 Vinayaka (Raga: Hamsadvani; Tala: Adi) “Hamsadvani is a secondary Karnatak raga, the basic form of which is Raga Sankarabharana. The attractive pentatonic scale is associated with midday, hope and exhortation, and is frequently used in religious and romantic songs. The melody is accessible and easily memorable, and the display of virtuosic rhythms soon proves quite intoxicating. The performance is one of incandescent energy and vitality.” 13:40 Bagayaneya (Raga: Chandorajothi; Tala: Adi) “This piece was composed by Tyagaraja, one of the three great South Indian composers, all of whom were active during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Revered as a saint, Tyagaraja was active as a singer, poet and composer, and is reputed to have laid the foundations for South Indian classical music as it exists today. He is held in such reverence that a piece by Tyagaraja is invariably included in the programme of any concert held in Madras.” 27:13 Bavanjtha (Raga: Mohanam; Tala: Adi) “The basic form of this secondary Karnatak raga is Raga Harikambhoji. The raga has associations of midday and sweetness and is frequently used in lighthearted songs. The pentatonic scale is of a type used in music throughout the world. This piece was also composed by Tyagaraja.” 42:36 Thani Avarthanam “The fourth piece gives full scope for each percussionist to demonstrate the characteristics of his instrument. In the order mridangam, ghatam, kanjira and muharsing, the players take turns to play the same rhythmic pattern.
