Since the pandemic, new waves of Chinese communities (新移民)have been putting down roots in Chiang Mai—drawn by education, spirituality, digital nomad life, art, Web3, and more. To understand where this is headed, we need to start with the past: We invited Historian Dr. Wasana Wongsurawat from Chulalongkorn University to explain the complex history of Chinese migration to Thailand and how Chinese identity has evolved over time. Main Themes covered: 1. The Politics of Terminology: From "Diaspora" to "New Migrants" 2. The State-Diaspora Relationship as Central Framework 3. Post-Cold War Thailand: The Great Power Pivot 4. Wasana's perspective on why she expects an Economic Slowdown in China 5. Constraints on China Research in Thailand 6. The status of Thailand's Democratisation This event was hosted in collaboration with 4seas and hosted online inperson at 4seas Nimman. About Ajahn Wasana: Associate Professor at Chulalongkorn University's Department of History, specializing in Global China and Chinese diaspora. Previously held research fellowships at NUS and Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Author of The Crown and the Capitalists: The Ethnic Chinese and the Founding of the Thai Nation (2019) and co-author of a Thai-language textbook on post-Mao Chinese history (2022).
