Sahiwal, Sargodha is a tehsil (subdivision) and a city within the Sargodha District of Punjab, Pakistan. It's important to differentiate it from the larger Sahiwal Division and city, which are located in a different part of the province. History and Location The town of Sahiwal, Sargodha, is an ancient settlement situated about 37 km from Sargodha city on the main Sargodha-Jhang road. It is located near the left bank of the Jhelum River. Historically, the town was a prominent trading center, with an ancient walled city and six gates. Its development was significantly hampered by floods, which deterred industrial investment. In 1994, it was designated a tehsil, and in 2001, it was upgraded to a municipal committee. Economy and Agriculture The economy of Sahiwal Tehsil is primarily based on agriculture, benefiting from the fertile land in the region. The area is part of Punjab's "food basket" and a key producer of crops like sugarcane and wheat. The tehsil is also known for its citrus fruit, including the famous Kinnow oranges from the broader Sargodha district, which is often called the "California of Pakistan" due to its citrus production. The presence of a sugar mill also provides employment to many residents. Demographics and Culture The majority of the population in Sahiwal Tehsil is Muslim, and Punjabi is the most widely spoken language. The culture is a mix of rural and urban influences. The people are known for their strong community bonds and traditional Punjabi customs. The town's historical walled city and winding streets reflect its ancient character, while modern infrastructure has been added to support its growing population.
