Being vegan in Azerbaijan is pretty new and different. When I say people I’m vegan, they do not understand what it is. I tell them that I am vegan and I do not consume any animal products at all. These includes milk and dairy products, eggs, honey and any products obtained from animals including meat as well. Being vegan is not just about how we eat but also paying attention that the clothes and even makeup and similar products we buy should not be tested on animals. There are very limited cafes in Baku which offer vegan salad, sandwiches, pastas and so on. This is the good side that at least you can go to those cafes with friends when you meet them. I also pay attention for plastic waste and general waste besides being a vegan. Therefore, as you see I always take my own reusable glass containers and cartons to shopping at the open air markets. People in Azerbaijan unintentionally use some of vegan products such as greens, fruits and veggies and there are even plenty of vegan dishes as well. Nonetheless, most of them are wrapped in the supermarkets I have to go to the open air markets. By buying package-free, vegan, locally-grown and organic products I keep my body healthy, protect the environment and support the local manufacturing. In the beginning, it was difficult since people were asking me why I did not want to use the plastic bags but later on, they got used it and even they started to ask me “where are your reusable containers”. And this is the app that reminds me of what and what I am doing this and keeps me motivated. Furthermore, I am also an eco-activist therefore I maximum try to participate at the events related to the environment and this is a photo of the beach clean-up event I took part on June 8. Actually, I do my utmost to show people that being vegan is not that difficult, and all they eat can be replaced by more compassionate and less cruel options.
