Log cabins built directly on the flat prairie are highly vulnerable to the freezing winds that sweep across the ground, turning the floorboards into blocks of ice. A resourceful widow decided to change her homestead's topography. She dug a deep, wide, continuous trench completely encircling her cabin foundation. She then stacked her entire winter supply of firewood tightly inside this "moat," bringing the wood level up to the floorboards. The settlement laughed at her "wood castle moat," claiming the snow would ruin the logs. But she covered the trench with scrap boards. This created a massive, heavy barrier that served two brilliant purposes. First, the dense wood blocked the icy winds from sweeping under her drafty floorboards. Second, the trench acted as a "cold sink"—the heaviest, most freezing air naturally sank down into the trench rather than seeping into her home. When the blizzard hit, her floor remained a cozy 65°F, and she simply opened a floor hatch to pull perfectly dry firewood up from her protective moat.
