A Personal Locator Beacon (PLB) may be a life saver in the event you find yourself faced with a serious emergency with no other means of communication available. A unit such as this is small, light weight, and quite affordable. Please note that a PLB should only be activated in the event of grave and imminent danger. After doing some research and thinking about this for a while I purchased a GME MT410G. Designed and manufactured here in Australia, it incorporates GPS technology to give your position far more accurately than non GPS equipped devices. GME export these so they may be available where you live. If this particular brand is not available it is likely an equivalent is. PLBs use the COSPAS-SARSAT satellite system to give worldwide coverage. In this video we look at this particular unit and discuss PLBs in general. We also touch on registering the unit with your countries rescue coordination service. In Australia this is the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA). Registration of a PLB is mandatory in most countries. The PLB is something that I will keep in my pack, and take on my various travels, but hope never to need to use.
