(13 May 1998) Spanish/Nat Cuban President Fidel Castro has arrived in the Swiss city of Geneva for a week-long official visit. He is expected to address a World Trade Organisation (W-T-O) meeting next Tuesday, a day after U-S President Bill Clinton. The meeting will celebrate 50 years of the global trading system which was born in 1948 in the Cuban capital Havana. Cuban President Fidel Castro flew into Geneva amid speculation that he U-S President Bill Clinton could meet face to face in Switzerland this week. The Cuban leader arrived on Wednesday for a week-long visit ahead of the World Trade Organisation (W-T-O) meeting next week. He was greeted at the airport by various members of the Swiss government. Castro is expected to address the meeting on Tuesday, a day after the American President whose country's trade embargo has virtually crippled the Cuban economy. Later this week the 70-year old communist leader will attend the 191-nation World Health Assembly in Geneva. Despite their differences both leaders have in common an idea born in 1948 in the Cuban capital Havana. The meeting will celebrate 50 years of the global trading system which was born in the Cuban capital Havana in 1948. Clinton's presence will spice up an occasion which could lay the groundwork for more trade liberalization. Issues expected to be addressed include the Asian financial crisis, global electronic commerce and trade on the Internet, and the inclusion of China in the W-T-O. Other national leaders from the countries attending include Britain's Prime Minister Tony Blair, Switzerlands President Falvio Cotta and Brazilian President Fernando Cardoso. The meeting at the trade body's headquarters on the banks of Lake Geneva will run from Monday May 18 to Wednesday. Tuesday will be reserved for celebrations to commemorate the half-century of the system created to expand and regulate global free trade.
